Ronald McDonald House
The
House That Love Built. It provides comfort and strength for seriously
ill children and their families.
Ronald
McDonald House or RMH does far more than provide accommodation. It also
provides support and comfort to families in need. It helps seriously ill
children to live happier and healthier lives.
The first Ronald McDonald House in
Malaysia was completed in 1999. It is the second in Asia and the first
in the ASEAN region. It is located on the premises of the Hospital
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM) and was built at a cost of RM2
million. Officially opened by YAB Dato' Seri Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd. Ali,
the wife of the Prime Minister on 21st June 1999, the facility has 20
bedrooms with attached bathrooms and 6 common areas including a kitchen,
lounge, dining area and laundry.
The
house is run by a house manager who takes care of day-to-day
administration. There is also a resident doctor to ensure
round-the-clock care and assistance for the children staying at the
house.
The main objective of the house is to
provide a home away from home for families who have to travel hundreds
of miles to seek medical treatment for their children. Staying at the
house enables parents to suppport their children and each other better
through the period of their children's treatment.
Funding
for the house was raised through RMCC's fund raising activities over the
years. Ongoing support in the form of donations of food and drink as
well as cleaning supplies is provided by companies like Nestle, MacFood,
Havi Food, Unilever and the Utusan Group which donates reading
materials.
